About the site

The site was born out of experience and a desire to tell people that they can celebrate a life in their own way. Often people can hold onto ashes for a couple of years or more before the decide what to finally do. By which time the funeral director is not at hand to guide you. Hopefully we can.

We believe that scattering a loved ones ashes doesn’t have to be mournful or skulking, it doesn’t have to be confusing or clandestine. It can be just what you want – a shout out, inspiring, reflective – a cherished moment. You loved them – show it in your own way….

We want you to contribute to the site if you have any comments, suggestions or advice that you think others would benefit let me know – just add them below or email us – info@scattering-ashes.co.uk

And if you want to help a bit more - link to this site from your site or blog,  copying this link scattering ashes or

  1. I would like to know whether I can scatter my father’s ashes off the Rock of Gibraltar. I tried to look for information about it but could not find anything. I would be bringing his remains from Spain and would cross the border by foot carrying an urn with his ashes. My father was born in La Linea but he learned English when he was a child just by going every weekend to Gibraltar to watch movies. He had the wish to have his ashes scattered in Gibraltar but I am not familiar with UK or Gibraltar laws regarding the feasibility of this act. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

  2. This is my advice, although please understand that is all it is and can’t be taken as a legal opinion
I think what you want to do is possible. British customs and excise allow people to bring ashes on to British territory. I would ensure you bring with you the correct certification, I would not know what this is in Spain, but one would image it would be a cremation and a death certificate. You would need permission to scatter the ashes on the rock – from the land owner, it is likely that would be the government there http://www.gibraltar.gov.gi/ . If you choose to scatter them in the sea from the rock that might not be necessary – but might be worth an email anyway. The issue I do not know about is Spain’s attitudes to exporting ashes, although as we are all part of Europe I hope there is much of an issue.
Good luck and if I could add that is a great choice, Gibraltar is a fantastic setting, I hope it goes well
    Richard
